The Shepherd Color Company Introduces PRECISE™ Pigments

The Shepherd Color Company introduces PRECISE™ pigments, a new product line of extremely durable pigments designed specifically for coloring fiber and thin film applications.

PRECISE™ pigments, like all of Shepherd Color's pigments, are 100% high performance inorganic pigments, also known as complex inorganic colored pigments (CICPs), or mixed metal oxide (MMO) pigments. Their characteristics include extreme durability, outstanding high temperature stability; they are chemically inert, insoluble and resistant to bleeding and migration, as well as being lightfast, and weathering well. PRECISE™ pigments are easy to disperse and are designed to be added to the polymer before it is extruded into fibers (solution dyeing) or into thin films. Compared with standard pigments, they have exceptionally low extruder pressure build up (Figure 1). PRECISE™ pigments are engineered to have excellent dimensional control to enhance your productivity.

PRECISE™ pigments are an excellent choice for outdoor applications. Fiber uses include; awnings, tents, carpeting, and furniture textiles. Uses for outdoor opaque thin films include; profiles, windows, doors, siding, marine docks and agricultural films. The Shepherd Color Company offers free online AIA Continuing Education Course

The Shepherd Color Company offers a free online course with AIA continuing education credit to help architects learn more about color choices for exterior applications and infrared reflectance technology. Though designed for AIA, the course is for anyone that wants to learn more about infrared reflective color. The course called "New Light on Color" features information about the basic interaction of light, color and heat as well as describing the impact color choice can have on the environment. The course takes about 1 hour to complete for 1LU. The Shepherd Color Company is a manufacturer of complex inorganic color pigments including Arctic® pigments that reflect the sun's infrared energy. These pigments allow the formulation of a variety of colored systems that minimize heat build-up and meet Energy Star requirements for solar reflectivity. For more information go to www.shepherdcolor.com/lms/ or call 513-874-0714 ext. 315.

The Shepherd Color Company Introduces Brown 10C873 Arctic® Pigment for Coatings

The Shepherd Color Company is adding Brown 10C873 to its Arctic® range of infrared reflecting pigments; used to help reduce heat build-up in dark color shades.

Arctic® Brown 10C873 is a dark brown pigment having outstanding weathering and durability characteristics. In comparison to other dark brown pigments, Brown 10C873 has a high solar reflectivity and can be used in all coatings applications where dark shades are required. Having a high reflectance enables the new trend for "cool" coatings to be satisfied. Cooler coatings also lead to improved durability

Alone or in combination with other Arctic® pigments, formulators can create dark colors that have even higher solar reflectance than those matched using infrared reflecting black pigments. Arctic® Brown 10C873 is complementary to the Arctic® Black 10C909 introduced in 2004.

Shepherd Color has considerable experience gained over the last two decades in developing new products for infrared reflecting applications. Since color matching and formulation is not always obvious and cannot be achieved in a conventional manner, Shepherd works alongside customers to maximize the benefits of the Arctic® product range.

High performance Arctic® infrared reflecting pigments are increasingly being used in exterior applications around the world where special attention is being paid to the heat build up caused by the absorption of the sun's energy and leading to the creation of "heat islands". This is especially important for roofing applications, where there are environmental and energy-saving initiatives, such as those introduced by the U.S. EPA in its Energy Star® program and other regulatory and code requirements. In addition to energy savings, IR-reflective roofs transfer less heat to the surrounding air - leading to cooler cities.

Due to the special infrared reflectance functionality and superior durability Arctic® pigments are primarily used exterior applications in Architectural and Building & Construction segments. They also are used in Military, Automotive, Sports and Leisure and even the Protective Coatings market segments.

The Shepherd Color Company Introduces Dynamix™ "Stir-in" Pigments

The Shepherd Color Company is proud to introduce Dynamix™ a unique, innovative and revolutionary line of "stir-in" inorganic color pigments to the coatings market.

Dynamix™ dispersion characteristics are so superior, conventional milling and dispersion techniques are unnecessary. Dynamix™ "stir-in" pigment technology requires only simple mixing. The time it takes to reach complete dispersion will depend upon the intensity of the mixing equipment but can be achieved in as little as 5 minutes.

Dynamix™ is unique because it is not restricted in application. It is compatible with solvent and waterborne coatings systems as well as 100% solids systems and UV cured coatings.

This flexibility has not been seen in the industry... until now!

The cost savings can be tremendous. This new dry dispersion technology eliminates traditional milling, saving up to 75% in pigment dispersion cycle time. Hours and days are transformed into minutes and color yields increase dramatically. Energy savings up to 90% can be achieved. Cleaning and waste disposal costs are substantially reduced. Dynamix™ allows you to streamline any manufacturing process and power-up the value chain!

Dynamix™ offers chemists, formulators and colorists the potential to be creative in their approach to coatings development. Color can be added at any stage. The color and tint strength properties are "locked-in" and can be achieved consistently. There are no dispersants or additional resins to formulate around; Dynamix™ is 100% color. The weather durability, heat stability and chemical resistance you have come to expect from Shepherd pigments is assured with Dynamix™.

Arctic Technology from The Shepherd Color Company

Arctic

Arctic technology is Shepherd's latest innovation for enhancing the value of your products.

The benefits of minimizing the temperature of plastics and coatings are well known. Heat accelerates the degradation of color, gloss, elasticity, adhesion, and other physical properties. Thermal expansion leads to warping and part failure. Hot roofs and cladding increase the energy consumption of HVAC systems.

Sunlight is absorbed by many products, causing their temperature to increase. That's why our researchers engineered Arctic pigments to reflect the sun's heat!

Colors formulated with Arctic pigments stay cooler than those using conventional pigments.
